Materials for Close Reading and Analysis of 13 Key Passages from Lord of the Flies
This resource focuses on close reading and analysis of 13 key passages in William Golding’s classic novel Lord of the Flies. Each passage contains directions for detailed, guided annotations designed to help students begin to see patterns and deeper meanings within the text. Each passage also contains multiple choice questions on skills such as theme, character, symbolism and inferencing. Finally, there are several writing prompts based on the passages that requires students to use evidence from the text to support their responses. This resource includes an answer key, including sample annotations for each passage.
This resource is structured so that teachers can use all or part of it when teaching the novel Lord of the Flies, and can help make this difficult text more accessible for your students. Teachers can use all of the passages as they occur in the book, or group them by skill or theme. When I teach this book, I have students do a first read of the chapter, and then go back and close read the passage or passages for that chapter.
This resource is best suited for grades 8-10 and addresses the following standards R1 (inferences and cite textual evidence), R2 (determine and analyze the development of themes), R3 (character), and W2 (expository writing).
