Lord of the Flies: Close Reading and Argumentative Writing

A Project Investigating the Deaths of Simon and Piggy

This resource is a culminating project for the book Lord of the Flies that builds skills in close reading and argumentative writing. Students assume the role of an investigator or a concerned citizen tasked with determining whether Jack should be charged with first-degree murder or accessory to murder, based on the facts presented in the novel. In this project, students first close read sections Lord of the Flies that deal with Simon’s death and its aftermath and Piggy’s death and its aftermath. Then, assuming the role of an investigator or concerned citizen, students write a letter arguing whether Jack should be charged with accessory to murder or first degree murder in the deaths of Simon and Piggy.
