This engaging in-class group activity asks students to literally draw connections to motifs in Lord of the Flies through the use of specific symbols throughout the story. Students can either complete the activity after they're done with half the reading, or wait until they've finished the novel and create it as a summative assessment.
The included handout instructs students to create a puzzle (through cardboard, construction paper, or any other type of paper) in order to form an actual shape of a symbol assigned to them (listed on the handout.) For example, the "Littluns" group are assigned the "Conch Shell" and "Bigguns" have "Piggy's Glasses."
Students will work together as a group to best create the puzzle symbol, incorporating a direct quote from the book on each puzzle "piece" and explaining its meaning. Listed instructions for the teacher to read aloud and a rubric are included on the handout. This reading activity is a wonderful way to have peers discussing key quotes from the novel AND interacting with it in a creative format!
