This is a great activity introducing some non-fiction into the unit. The students would do this activity after the death of Simon to discuss what happened and how emotions effect the way people act. They will compare what happened to Simon to the story of Charlie Young Jr. a man who was beaten to death by a mob of young boys. My students really have a lot to say about where responsibilities lie and what actions really should be taken. Not only is this lesson a great way to introduct non-fiction to a unit, but also a great way to open up meaninful discussion for students.
