Lord of the Flies Persuasive Research topics and Research Reflections

Lord of the Flies Persuasive Research topics and Research Reflections
Product Description
This assignment could be used with middle school to sophomores in high school. I am currently using this with my Pre-AP 10th graders. It provides 8 persuasive research topics to choose from such as Persuade the reader that leaders always act in the best interest of their constituents or do leaders choose to act in a way that serves themselves best with little regard for others?

Also, included is a cheat sheet for possible topics to research and how it relates to the novel. I included ways for the students to elaborate on their topic. In addition, this might help reluctant students see the big picture for how the essay will turn out. It could also help all students as it provides some brainstorm ideas for what to research and how it relates to the novel. Usually, it involves a question asking the student to compare something in Lord of the Flies with another historical event or person. Key words for researching on a computer are also included

With partners, I have students research articles that support or refute the persuasive topic. It can also be done individually or with more group members. The teacher would just change the requirements on how many articles to find.

Also, a reflection document for students is included to help them with their internet sources. Each reflection asks 6 questions. I ask students to find 1 article that supports their topic, 1 that refutes, and 1 of their choosing. There is also an option for extra credit.

1. Works Cited
2. Is this article persuasive or expository? How do you know?
3. Does the article support or refute your topic and give evidence. 4. Quote and explain 1 rhetorical devices used in the article
5. Summary of main points
6. How does this article connect to your persuasive research topic?

Also, an easy rubric for assessing the article reflections is included. If the student answers all the #2s then they get 10 points. If they skipped one of the #2 questions, then I deduct -3.
