The concept of human nature has been around for centuries. In William Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies, one can't help but wonder: are human beings born inherently good? Or, do we start out inherently selfish and need our parents, teachers, and friends to teach us right from wrong?
In this journal activity, students will be asked to examine this question before watching a 60 Minutes news clip. After watching, students will reexamine their initial thoughts, noting any changes or whether or not their opinion stayed the same.
This is a great activity that fosters meaningful classroom discussion before reading the novel. VIDEO IS NOT INCLUDED. However, a link to the video clip is given with the journal. Video can also be easily found via Google or YouTube.
