This activity will promote your student's understanding of the novel Lord of the Flies and how persuasion plays a big role. After giving a lesson on rhetorical devices, have students write from the point of view of one of the characters about a persuasive topic featured in the chapter. For each chapter, there is a minimum of two persuasive scenarios. Some chapters have 5 or more persuasive scenarios. There is a total of 50 persuasive scenarios. Also, there is a list of 8 persuasive topics that relate to the entire book. Individually or in groups students use rhetorical devices to prove their scenario. I have students work in groups and post to Edmodo. It could also be done as a Persuasion Journal. It could also be a game. Each group could use notecards and write their short persuasive speech scenario on one side and the rhetorical devices used on the back. This could be used in advanced classes and regular classes.
I include an example of how to complete a persuasive scenario in the document.
