This test contains three sections:
--Multiple Choice: 15 questions
--True and False (requires written responses): 10 questions
--Symbol Chart (student must explain the symbol and how it is used): 5 symbols
--Short Answer: 10 questions
--Essay: 1 question
This test covers all aspects of the novel: character behaviors, symbols, themes, conflicts, etc. Each of the sections begins with explicit directions and gives the point value of each of the questions in that section.
The test relies fairly heavily on writing skills-the multiple choice is the only section that does not require a written response of some kind. It takes a little bit longer to grade than a simple multiple choice test, but I have found that it more adequately measures the students' understanding of the novel.
