Directions: Use this handout as a place to record quotes that serve as answers or possible answers to the essential questions below. First, record the page number in the far left column. In the middle column, record the quote. Finally, I’d like for you to write the number of the question to which the quote applies and a 1-2 sentence explanation of how the quote answers the question. There is no limit to the number of quotes you can record. However, you are required to find at least fourteen. You must have at least one quote for all of the questions.
1. What does it mean to be civilized?
2. How do society’s views and stereotypes affect a person’s power?
3. What is an individual’s responsibility to community?
4. How do actions of characters reveal their personalities?
