Use this fun Los Animales del Zoológio A-Z chant to learn letter sounds! I have included American Sign Language alphabet for additional kinesthetic support.

The alphabet and the letter sounds form the foundation for literacy. For dual language learners, it is important to consider the following: What is the native language and how much overlap exists between the languages? Is the native language alphabetic or logographic? How similar are the orthographies? What is the overlap in that sound-symbol correlation? These factors make a difference in the degree of transferability between L1 and L2.

Due to recent research, we now understand that cross-linguistic transfer occurs within languages and across languages. If the students are exposed to and have foundational Phonological Awareness skills in their native language, we know that they will transfer these skills to English. How cool is that? All we have to do is help them bridge between the two languages. We also know that we have 44 phonemes in English and only 22 phonemes in Spanish. I suggest working on those 22 additional English phonemes that don’t exist in the Spanish language.

This resource is simply the beginning stage of the process. I have developed an English and a Spanish version of the Los Animales del Zoológio A-Z. This product addresses the letters of the alphabet and their sounds with a pictured visual cue (Shutterstock image of animals) and the initial letter of each in American Sign Language for a complete multi-sensory experience.
