Loser is a coming of age young adult novel first published in 2002 by American author Jerry Spinelli. It details the growth of Donald Zinkoff, who is branded a "loser" by his classmates due to his cockiness, and sometimes clueless enthusiasm. The book is unique among Spinelli's work in that is entirely written in the present tense. The life lesson of Loser is about rudeness, failure, and heroism., It was nominated for the 2004-05 Mark Twain Award.

This study guide addresses the following reading skills: cause and effect, drawing conclusions, making inferences, fact and opinion, and finding the sequence. The students have the opportunity to write a journal entry, write a narrative from a character's point of view, and to respond to text. There are many opportunities for self-expression.
