These are resources created to accompany the reading of Loser by Jerry Spinelli. Within in the zip file are several documents. This has been designed as a read aloud unit, but it can be modified for a number of different settings. This is a 5 week unit, with 3.5 weeks dedicated to reading and 1.5 weeks dedicated to projects.
I use 40 minutes a day to do my read aloud units. I spend Monday-Thursday doing the read aloud and we quiz on Friday. When I do a read aloud, we begin by reviewing what we have read. Then, we read the new section (about 15 minutes of actual reading) and discuss as we go. Then, students are given a slip of paper that they glue into their response journals. We practice constructed responses with many of these questions and then students share their writing at the end of each session.
The first document consists of daily constructed response questions. These are designed to be cut out, pasted, and answered in a daily response journal. The questions have been written to follow approximately 15 minutes of reading from the novel. Each question includes the page number where we stopped for the day. I always have my students write their responses (in at least 5 sentences) and use at least two pieces of evidence from the text to support their opinions.
The second document has a project and rubric that can be used at the conclusion of the novel. The project is designed to have students relate to the novel in a creative way.
There are four documents that are quizzes on each section. The quizzes are structured to have 10 short answer questions and one short essay question. The short answer questions evaluate comprehension skills and the short essay question evaluates constructed response skills. There are also answer keys included with the quizzes.The last quiz follows only two days of reading instead of four.
