This short project (about two weeks total time) is designed to bring Gifted and Talented projects back into GATE. Sure, we need to be rigorous in our instruction of GATE English classes to prepare them for AP English and College down the road, but sometimes it is good to bring the class back to its creative roots and allow students to show off how truly Gifted and Talented they are.
This project affords students the change to 'discover' a Lost Civilization of their own creation. The final product is two-part: a 6 page chapter for an imaginary high school textbook and a presentation that serves to showcase their talents or gifts. Students will need to include the typical features of history textbook, describing the geography, culture, government, famous people, religion, wars, and pre-history of their own civilization. In the presentation students will have an opportunity to create 'artifacts' of their civilization: songs, dance, art, pottery, poetry, maps, religious texts, and almost anything they can create (that remains school appropriate). Students will delve into the world of textbook and curriculum design as they attempt to replicate key features with visuals, timelines, glossaries, and designing their own chapter review.
Included in this .zip folder are three variations of the one-sheet project description (a worksheet for a paper version of the project, a worksheet for an electronic project, a electronic PDF form of the digital project), a Microsoft Word Template for the student, a PDF Rubric for the project, and a Spreadsheet of the Rubric that performs all necessary calculations for the teachers, is optimized for printing two Rubrics per page for students, and exports names and final grades to a separate sheet that easily sorts into alphabetical order for easy grade book entry.
