I have always loved the novel Lost In The Barrens, even as a student. When I started reading the novel with my 7/8 class a few years ago I had no idea what a huge part of my program it would become. It took on a life of its own, and our classroom was taken over by large-scale models and amazing art pieces. My students also wrote their first essays – a slow but very rewarding process. The kids were so inspired by the story that the work just seemed to flow out of them with very little prompting from me.
This package contains student instructions for three different assignments based on the novel – a creative project, a research assignment and an essay. Three choices for each are given so that students can differentiate for themselves by choosing according to their interests. Because this unit was designed for 7/8s who had never written essays before, basic thesis statements are provided.
This file includes assessment checklists for the first two assignments and a full rubric for the essay assingnment.
