This close reading lesson plan is an excerpt from Lost Star: The Story of Amelia Earhart. This is from the chapter "Road to Fame." It is the 1st of 3 close reading lessons to be used throughout this book. It is assumed that your students will be reading the entire book from chapter 1 to the end, but that you will just stop at the excerpts used in the close reading lessons to do a close read. Each of the 3 lessons is detailed for the 1st reading (students read to discover what the text says explicitly and make logical inferences, summarizing the key ideas and details), 2nd reading (students read while answering text dependent questions that lead them to deeper meaning and focus on author's word choices), and 3rd reading (rereading portions to clarify confusions). This lesson and the 2nd lesson (from the chapter "First Pacific Flight" are written with a great deal of support. The support can be adjusted easily if you'd like students to work in pairs or groups. The last lesson (from the chapter "Prisoner of the Japanese") is an independent task and can be used as an assessment. It also includes an opinion writing prompt. The excerpt in each lesson has been typed out and includes an embedded glossary. Text dependent questions are written along the side so students can refer quickly to the glossary and text while answering.
