A great way to EFFECTIVELY use a high interest video in your classroom! I use the PowerPoint and handout to encourage students to think about key topics they will encounter in Lord of the Flies: leadership, responsibility, survival, etc. I also use it to preview some key CCSS we work with throughout the novel, specifically analyzing how complex characters develop, determining theme, and analyzing an author's choices. The PowerPoint breaks down the first episode of the TV show LOST (currently available through Netflix) into small segments. I preview the questions with the students before we watch the clip, then we watch the clip while they record some details on their handout, then we discuss. I've had a lot of success with this mini-lesson (about one class period), and I hope you do too!
This includes a PowerPoint and Word Doc. You can edit both to better serve the needs of your students if necessary.
