Like most of my lessons, this is a supplemental activity intended to bring in primary sources, authentic texts, and non-lab methods for addressing Dimension 1 of the NGSS for science teachers. This can also be used as informational text for ELA classrooms. The 2-page handout can stand alone or the associated PPT can be used to guide the entire class. The text used is visible in the thumbnail view.
The (science-related) essential questions most directly addressed by this assignment are:
ESS2.A: EARTH MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS: How do Earth’s major systems interact?
ESS2.C: THE ROLES OF WATER IN EARTH’S SURFACE PROCESSES: How do the properties and movements of water shape Earth’s surface and affect its systems?
DIMENSION 1: HOW DO SCIENTISTS CONSTRUCT EXPLANATIONS?
In this handout, students will complete a pre-reading activity over glaciers and then read one paragraph from Agassiz written in 1824 about glaciers. It's challenging, but short so most students should be able to struggle through to construct meaning. You can scaffold by identifying some of the challenging words and providing definitions or showing images before or after the first reading. This is meant for MS/HS classes and is not intended to be the ONLY way to teach content about glaciers.
The PPT slides are optional. Use them if you want to guide everyone through the handout at the same pace. It is bare-bones. Any text in red you may want to modify or edit.
