In this activity, students will have the chance to view the Louisiana Purchase from the viewpoint of the Americans and the French, to see not only that it happened, but why. Many times, we teach the after effects without putting the event in context. Students work with a partner and read through the scenarios of the USA and France during the Louisiana Purchase. They will collaboratively identify the goals of the USA and France at the beginning of negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase deal, and then independently complete a writing assignment to evaluate the effectiveness of the ultimate deal, in helping each country achieve its goals.
