This is a collect of questions, vocabulary, and writing activities for the book, Louisiana's Way Home by Kate DiCamillo. I have used it, very successfully, in my classroom to reach all kinds of learners. I use this Louisiana's Way Home close reading unit, specifically, to bridge my readers from answering largely literal questions about their reading to more inferential questions. Many of my students have special needs and need to be provided with guidelines as they write about literature, so you will see reminders about sentence structure. I have used these Louisiana's Way Home questions with my special needs readers as well as will my very capable readers and gifted students. There are questions regarding figurative language, pre-reading assignments, and chapter-by-chapter vocabulary included as well. Louisiana's Way Home is a meaningful story that will make such an impression on your readers. When Louisiana's granny wakes her in the middle of the night one night, she tells her "the day of reckoning has arrived". It takes Louisiana a long time to understand what this means. When she does, Louisiana begins to question her entire sense of self. We first meet lovable Louisiana when she is a child beauty pageant contestant in Raymie Nightingale. As attached to Raymie Nightingale and Beverly Tapinski as ever, Louisiana needs to chart her own path when her future is pulled out from under her. Louisiana's Way Home is a must read for any upper-elementary/middle school classroom.
