This document is designed to act as a group exercise for up to six groups. It features six classic love poems and space for groups to write their modernized adaptations in columns alongside the original. Texts by Shakespeare (2), Donne, Dickinson, Jonson, and Browning make up the originals. This takes the space of about one class period to allow the groups time to understand the originals, write their adaptations, and share. Teachers should spend time with each group making sure that they understand the content of the original and facilitating the adaptation into modern parlance. Students love the activity (no pun intended). To take it a step further, teachers could provide construction paper for students to make their own valentines. This prints as six separate pages, one poem on each, in columns alongside blanks to write the adaptation. Each page has a space to write the names of the group members at the top of the page.
