I had a great time using this with 5/6th graders last year in February. It helped open dialogue about several of these artists the students were using appropriate terms to describe them.

These listening lessons are meant as six mini-lessons, lasting approximately 10 minutes each. They can also be combined for a longer listening lesson, and would be great for a sub.

Product includes:

-EDITABLE Powerpoint presentation including a title page, short composer or song biography, and three questions for each piece. (Blank slides are also included)

-PDF copy of Powerpoint presentation

-Teacher's guide with answers and extensions.

-Blank student worksheets for completing listening activity.

-SOUND FILES ARE NOT INCLUDED, however there is a link to a SafeShare video for each piece.

This month's pieces are:

-Someone to Watch Over Me, George & Ira Gershwin (Sung by Ella Fitzgerald)

-What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong

-Can't Help Falling in Love, Elvis Presley

-My Funny Valentine, from Babes in Arms (Sung by Etta James)

-Ave Maria, Franz Schubert

-All of Me, John Legend

Musical genre of the month: Jazz

Element of music of the month: Vocal Timbre

The worksheets and slides are designed to have two short answer

questions and one complete sentence answer. I encourage students to spend the most time on question number three as a way of internalizing each piece. It is my hope that they will create a personal connection with the music and a lasting memory.
