This is a comprehensive unit. 80 slides. PowerPoint is 645,000 KB, filled with images, songs, embedded video clips from YouTube and from movies. (I do not own these). PowerPoint outlines the definition of Romance Genre and provides example stories and student discussion to questions asked. Including writing time, this entire unit could span 3-4 weeks.
The final “project” that comes out of this Love Story unit is an Original Movie Script (included). Students follow a very detailed, specific assignment that includes three main parts: Writing character profiles, writing one full scene of their original “movie script,” and writing 4 short “snapshots” of other scenes that they would put in their movie.
Example love stories in PowerPoint are: the fictional stories of Romeo and Juliet, August Rush (movie) and The Phantom of the Opera. Real-life loves stories: The Story of WE (The Duke and Duchess of Windsor) and JFK and Jackie O. Includes fascinating voice interview with Jackie Kennedy, Lana Del Rey’s song “National Anthem,” King Edward speaking his abdication speech, an embedded movie trailer for August Rush, and a clip from the movie WE offering a contemporary definition of love to compare/contrast with others presented.
After learning about some of the unique attributes of each love story, there are notes for students to take on Critically Viewing film. They will then critically view The Phantom of the Opera and take notes based on the 12 terms.
Question to analyze: How do the filmmakers use these cinematic elements to convey the (love) themes of the movie/ to enhance the story? A wide variety of other movies could be used for the critical viewing experience.
