This material is a set of reading comprehension and vocabulary questions to accompany the novel, Love, Sugar, Magic; a Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano.
The novel is a magic realism story set in a small town in Texas. It follows an Hispanic-American girl, Leo, who is the youngest in a family of baking brujas who use their magic to mix sweetness, love and luck into the treats they bake. Leo isn’t supposed to even know about magic yet, so when she begins to experiment with magical baking to help her friends, she causes one disaster after another. This novel explores themes of truthfulness, self-reliance, the support of family, and finding one’s own place in the world and is suitable for readers in grades 4, 5, and 6.
The novel study divides the book into 10 assignments covering approximately 30 pages each. Due to the inconsistent chapter divisions in the books, assignment lengths vary with four assignments of approximately 22 pages and six assignments of approximately 34 pages. An assignment guideline is included for ease of lesson planning. Assignment contain factual based questions, questions that require inferencing and drawing conclusions as well as questions that prompt students to offer their own opinions of the events of the story. The vocabulary sections of each assignment will help to identify new terms and expand the student’s comprehension. The questions can be used to support discussions of the novel or literature circle discussions.
