Jack seems not to like poetry very much at the beginning of the school year; however, he changes his mind and learns that a poem can change your day. These reader response pages are suitable if you decide to do a whole class read aloud, a small reading group setting or if you assign the book for independent reading.

Using the reader response approach for Love That Dog is interesting and engaging for both the teacher and the students. Students will come up with ideas and interpretations that the teacher has never thought of. Students are part of an active process of making meaning when reading literature. Reading, writing, speaking and listening become integrated and students have the opportunity for higher thinking skills of interpreting, synthesizing and evaluating when reading.
