This product includes 120+ novel and poetry study questions including discussion questions, literary technique questions, and writing prompts on cards for studying the novel, Love That Dog, written by Sharon Creech. This novel is a wonderful tool for teaching students about poetry as the protagonist in the story learns that poetry can comfort, inspire, and enrich its readers. The novel illustrates how reading mentor texts, generating lists, asking questions, writing words with pictures (imagery), figurative language, and literary devices combine to bring value and enjoyment to poems. As students enjoy the story of Jack, his inspiring teacher, and his beloved dog, they learn to appreciate the role of poetry in literature and the importance of poetry for readers.

  • This novel is appropriate for middle school and junior high boys and girls. It is recommended for grades three and up and for children eight years and older. Most middle school students will identify with Jack, his experiences, and his struggle to find his own voice through poetry. The book endorses positive themes such as perseverance, risk-taking, family, pets, literary appreciation, teacher appreciation, and the importance of learning and exploring new ideas.

  • This book is an especially useful vehicle for addressing a wide range of TEKS and Common Core standards and the questions provided allow differentiation and adaptation in using the book to address these standards in discussion, presentation, and composition.

  • This resource is great for classroom discussion, literature circles, book clubs, novel study and analysis, task cards, book challenges, reflection journals, and/or student writing prompts. It is especially useful for teaching students about poetry and literature.

  • The questions are labeled by book entry for entry specific questions.

  • General questions exploring themes, structure, mood, literary elements, and the author's craft are included without reference to specific chapters.

  • An answer key is not included as most of the questions in this study are analytical and open to interpretation. They are purposefully designed for discussion, reflection and to encourage composition. The questions prompt students to think critically, share observations, express their understanding, and make connections and applications while exploring literature.
