*This slide show supplements a FREE poetry / ELA unit. Information for how to download all of the lesson plans and resources is included in the slide show download*
Since the first time I taught this unit, I fell in LOVE with Sharon Creech's "Love That Dog". It is the perfect resource for teaching close reading, characteristics of poetry, and text-based evidence through a highly-engaging book.
Engage NY "Love that Dog" is a well-designed poetry unit, however, creating the main anchor chart in the unit takes a long time and uses a large amount of wall space. Because of this, I have created this EDITABLE slide show that includes all of the information from the "Characteristics of Poetry" anchor chart, in digital form. The slide show can also be printed to allow students to take notes with them for assistance on homework.
This document will help your students improve their skills:
-Explaining the characteristics of poetry
-Close reading skills
-Use of evidence from the text
-Use of quotations
I have used this unit successfully both for whole-group instruction, small group instruction, and literature circles, and book clubs.
In this presentation, each slide introduces a new characteristic of poetry and lists examples from "Love That Dog" that show evidence of the poetry vocabulary. All poetry vocabulary is added to a list on the left side of the screen so that you don't need to move back and forth between slides frequently to review content. This is also EDITABLE so that you can have your students add evidence from the text that they have found.
Although this unit is designed for fourth-grade, it can also be used for middle school or high school ELA classes that need material for students reading from lower-level texts. The boy in the book isn't interested in poetry, which I've found is a connection that many of my struggling readers enjoy.
This unit has created a love of reading and poetry with my students. I hope your class enjoys it as much as mine have over the years.
