Over the years my novel study and reading have evolved as the need for students to dig and go deeper into a text has increased. Using Common Core and Florida English Language Arts Standards as a foundation, I have developed questions that require students to go back into a text while thinking critically and deeper.
I have my students read the section and answer the questions as independent work or homework and then as groups we discuss. Students completing these questions before group helps them come to group prepared and helps me hold them accountable for homework.
I usually give students two days to complete a reading (informational text study on off novel days), and grade them as they are due. I do allow students to go back and fix their answers based on our discussion. Students circle the answers they fixed so regrading is easy (I give 1/2 point for each fix). I then have students turn in whole packet at the end of novel and give them an overall grade (rubric included).
I have found this holds students accountable and encourages reading at home. Students love to come to group ready and excited to discuss.
Please contact with any questions. As you know, mistakes happen...please contact with any corrections that need to be made.
This novel also contains an end of novel extension activity where students are writing their own poems similar to 'Love that Dog' and 'Love that Boy'. Examples of both are included for students to easily reference.
