This is a beginners / lower primary English as a Second Language (ESL) examination. It was given to primary-school grade 2 students in Asia whose native language was not English.
If you're finding it difficult to write or format a test for young ESL children, or low level learners, this exam is ready to print and use - just add your school name!
The exam starts with a READING PASSAGE about a girl who is visiting the seaside, her name, age, her mother and brother, and what they can see and are doing. There are 10 multi-choice reading comprehension questions.
The next section is DIALOGUE, firstly about WHERE ANIMALS LIVE (e.g. in the jungle / on a farm) [5 multi choice questions]:
The second part of the DIALOGUE section [another 5 multi-choice] asks, WHERE ARE YOU GOING and WHAT CAN YOU DO AT...? (e.g. a cafe / movie theatre).
The third section is VOCABULARY. For the first five questions here, students have to take the vocabulary words from a box and write them to match up to a picture. It's about SEA CREATURES:
The next part of the vocabulary section [5 more questions in the same style] is about PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE (on, beside, under, between, behind).
The next section is GRAMMAR of THIS/THAT/THESE/THOSE. For 10 questions students have to fill in the blank based on pictures of animals.
The final section is a WRITING section where the students are prompted to write about UNDER THE SEA (there is a picture to guide them).
This test was given to primary 2 ESL learners at a private school in Thailand. The test was 1 hour in duration. Results ranged across the board in a fair spread representative of ability.
The file is in Word and you can edit it if you need. There is a full answer key too.
I hope it's useful to you.
