Luck O’ the Irish High Frequency Word Card Game RF.K.3.c
Object of the game is to collect the most cards. The game can be played in pairs or small groups.
Students draw a card, if they can read the word, then they keep the card. If they cannot read the card it goes on the bottom of the pile. If a student draws a Luck O’ the Irish card he or she may take a card from another player. If the student can read the word they can keep the card. I have seen this game called snap, zap, bang… Other ideas- Print 2 copies of the word cards to use as a memory match game. Place cards around the room and have students rainbow write for writing center.
Luck O’ the Irish Numbers Card Game
Object of the game is to collect the most matched cards. The game can be played in pairs or small groups.
The dealer deals 5 cards to each player. The remainder of the cards go into a draw pile. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. The first player draws a card, if a match can be made either with a number card and a ten frame or a hats picture card, the match is laid face up in front of the player. If no match can be made, player discards a card in a discard pile and play goes to the next player. The next player may take the top card from the discard pile or choose a new card. If a player draws a Luck O’ the Irish card, then the player may choose a card from another player’s hand. The Luck O’ the Irish card is placed back on the bottom of the pile. Play continues until all matches are made or time is up. If draw pile is gone before all matches are made then shuffle the discard pile to continue play. Player with the most matches wins.
Other ideas- Have students match 2 cards that make 10 (K.OA.4.). Decompose numbers and write fact families on dry erase boards or paper (K.OA.3.). Draw 2 cards and say which is greater or less than the other (K.CC.6.), (K.CC.7. compare numerals).
