How to Use it:
I have been using this idea in my classroom for many many years and it never fails to impress me!

One or two student names are selected by using labelled paddle pop sticks or student numbers.

I keep the ‘Lucky Duck’ name a secret until the end of the day. I write these names (high) on my whiteboard and use the ‘Lucky Duck’ poster sign to cover the names. (A magnet helps keep the sign in place).

All throughout the day, I take note of how the ‘Lucky Duck’ student is behaving. I refer to the ‘Lucky Duck’ often and remind students of what I am expecting from them e.g. great listening, hands in their laps.

I have noticed that mentioning you are watching for the “Lucky Duck’ creates a ripple effect of positive behaviour. Quietly mentioning or whispering it to certain students is also another way of encouraging desired behaviour.

At the very end of each day, if the ‘Lucky Duck’ has followed teacher instructions, classroom and school rules and made great choices I announce the ‘Lucky Duck’. I then send home a merit award and provide a prize or raffle ticket. The 'Lucky Duck’ also gets to wear a brag tag and is the VIP for the following day.

If a student doesn’t quite make great choices throughout the day, I do not announce the name and just remind the whole class of what is required to be the ‘Lucky Duck’.

Alternatively, 'Lucky Ducks' can be used to target a specific event or transition like during assemblies, reading or math centers, walking in lines etc.
