Subtration Word/Story Problems

The children will solve the 3 St. Patrick’s Day word problems by drawing illustrations and writing the equation.

Activities

Spin & Compare

Spin a spinner 2 times. Record a number on each leprechaun hat. Compare the 2 numbers. Write <, >, or = on the pot of gold between the 2 numbers.

Spin & Write

Spin a spinner and write the number on the pot of gold. Write the number that comes before and after the number on the clouds.

Find all the dominos with the sum of the number on the pot of gold. Record the dots on the blank domino and write the equation shown on the domino.

Copy on cardstock and laminate. The children will add the dots on dominos and sort them by less than 6, greater than 6, and equal to 6. There is a recording sheet that can be used to record their sort by drawing the dots on the blank dominos. This recording sheet can be used without the sorting mat.

Shamrock Ten Frames

Copy on cardstock and laminate. The children will place St. Patrick’s Day erasers, green unifix cubes, or any other markers in the empty boxes on the ten frames to find the missing addend. Each ten frame has a letter on it. The children will match the letter on the ten frame to the letter on the recording sheet. They will record their ten frame on the blank ten frame and record the missing addend in the equation.

The ten frames can be used in math talk or any other activity using ten frames.

Game

This can be played as a game or played individually.

Children will spin a 0 – 9 spinner. They will find the hat that has the number word that shows their number, write the number underneath the word, and color the hat. If you are playing it as a game, the children take turns spinning. They miss a turn if they spin a number that has already been colored on their game board. The child that colors all their hats first wins.
