We all love Lucy Calkin’s expertise and lessons, but finding the time to read them before teaching can be an overwhelming task. I highly encourage you to read the lessons directly from Lucy’s curriculum guides, by no means is this the entire curriculum, but rather a snapshot. Then use my summaries as a reference prior to teaching the lesson. I have created summaries of each lesson for the purpose of your ease of preparing materials, knowing the teaching point, reminding yourself about key focus areas within the lesson and how to work with your students during the workshop. You may also use my summaries for a place to jot down notes as you are planning. This work is based off of her Units of Study for Teaching Reading at the First Grade level. I have also incorporated extension lesson suggestion ideas from Jennifer Serravallo's "The Reading Strategies Book" and binder covers for each of the units.
