Last school year was my first attempt to use the Units of Study in Writing developed by Lucy Calkins. While I liked the units and was pleased with the progress my students made, I struggled to follow the lesson plans. When planning I could read the lesson and all of the dialogue and it would make perfect sense. Then, during instruction, I would find myself having to flip through the 6-8 page lesson plan thinking “Wait, What did Lucy want me to do/say next?”
So, I created a single page chart for each lesson listing the key points of each section of the lesson. During instruction, I can glance down at a single page to ensure that I am addressing each aspect of the lesson. The chart lists notes to refresh my memory of the scenarios and strategies described in the Units of Study.
This product is NOT detailed enough to be used as the only resource to implement the Units of Study. It is meant to be used as a guide, a reminder, of the specific scenarios and teaching points to make throughout each lesson. You will still need to read each lesson as written by Lucy Calkins in the Units of Study.
I chose to make this an editable Microsoft Word file so that you would be able to add/delete items in each chart to customize instruction and make this as user-friendly as possible.
