This 35-page PPT provides an in-depth yet straightforward presentation on the eight phases of the moon. The visuals included will help you teach this to your students with ease!
I start off by showing students a picture of a Full Moon and having them brainstorm why there is not a full moon present every night. Students then learn about the Lunar Cycle and its relationship with sunlight. I then have students in partners try to draw out all the phases they can think of to activate prior knowledge.
Prior to beginning the phases, students learn the definition of illuminated and unilluminated as well as waxing and waning. They are then walked through the 8 phases, starting with the new moon and ending with the waning crescent. Pictures as well as information about each phase is included in every slide. A image of the lunar cycle is included after each phase and I circle where on the cycle the phase is that they just took notes on.
I end with five check for understanding questions. Two of them involve pictures of the entire cycle. There is a star that is placed above a phase and students need to identify its name. The other three questions involve multiple choice questions that deal with waxing/waning and the first/third quarter.
