This Word document asks students to match details from the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (2012), Journeys-fifth grade selection "Lunch Money" with the author's purpose. Students also select the main purpose of the selection and explain their choice. The format of the questions better simulates the type of questions found on the Smarter Balance ELA practice test than those found within the publisher's materials. My students score higher on comprehension assessments after using a graphic organizer such as this while reading. It can be used individually, in small groups, or as large group instruction. The product is also available as a Smartboard Notebook file.
