Students love this hands-on lab! Directions are provided to run an activity that uses balloons to measure the capacity of student’s lungs. The activity is well-received as student’s are quite interested in measuring their own normal and maximum lung capacity. There is quite a bit of integrated math that goes along with this activity: measuring, averaging, and graphing. The data table to record the results is included as is graph paper which can be integrated into a laboratory notebook.
A document camera-ready image that shows the clinical use of a spirometer (a medical device that accurately measures lung capacity) is provided to project for your class. There is also a recommended instructional video that shows an excellent animation of the lungs for those that have the ability to project online videos in their classroom.
