This is an original teacher created argumentative model essay. It is five paragraphs and uses the quote sandwich body paragraph format (topic sentence, context, quote, analysis). It has a catchy lead, correctly cited quotes, and strong vocabulary. The model essay topic is whether Lyddie is enslaved to the factory (and it argues "yes she is enslaved"). It also contains a counter claim (aka counter argument) which counters, gives a counter reason, and then refutes with evidence. (See my counter argument resources which are separate but relevant.
I use this with the EL- Expeditionary Learning- curriculum in my school. The model essay in the workbook is not the correct format we want our students to use. The counter argument paragraph in this model essay uses the counter-body 3 format which is taught in my counter argument product which is also for sale.
Ways to use this:
1. Have students highlight certain aspects: catchy hook, thesis, TAG (title, author, genre), citations, transitions, quotes, strong vocabulary, etc.
2. I never lock my products so you may make this weaker and add in mistakes your students commonly make and have the students find and fix those weaknesses/mistakes.
3. Have students "score" this using an argumentative essay rubric.
4. Have an honors class add an additional quote and more analysis to each body paragraph.
