The practice of pairing sounds and letters together is a great prep-tool for learning phonemic awareness skills. Along with Beginning letters & sounds (see S Says SSSSS), another part of Skill One is to identify the Ending sound of a word’s letter.
Mastering Ending Word Sounds can be a little more challenging to young ears & mouths. So, starting simply and slowly might be a more effective way to practice this skill.
Using simple and familiar pictures / words from word families or beginning sight words with the letters gives your emergent reader the confidence to “attack” new words.
