This is written as a two week lesson for junior high and ESL students. The lesson covers the period of the late 19th and early 20th century with the rise of Germany as a major power, imperialism, militarism, and industrial rivalry as causes of increasing international tensions, the alliance system, and the killing of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand as the cause of the outbreak of a general European war. The lesson also cover the conditions and costs of the trench warfare on the western front, the causes of the American entry into the war in 1917, the role of the United States in the final year of the war, the armistice, and the Treaty of Versailles. The lesson contains four separate reading assignments, each with key vocabulary terms, comprehension question, and an essay question. The lesson also contains map identification, a chart for a graphing activity, a fill in the blank review, and two quizzes
