This is a great activity to help students understand the concept of area and to also help them relate the concepts of area to multiplication. This is great tool to scaffold lower level learners as they move from a conceptual understanding to a more complex understanding of area.
**My class loves this activity and I saw tons of light bulbs coming on the more figures we built!
Students can choose the number of cubes they use to build their rectangular figure. They must count and find their length and width.
You can also differentiate the learning by allowing lower level learners to only use up to 12 cubes; and higher level learners may be able to use up to 48 cubes.
