This game is a fun way to consolidate the Magic e letter/sound configuration. There are ten boards and sixty illustrated word cards. The word list is included in the PREVIEW. You can play with 2 to 10 players, or more in groups. The targeted skill for each player is reading the word (from the board without illustration) and matching it to the spoken word, then validating by matching with the illustrated card. Some boards have similar words (cone/cane) to further develop phonemic ability.
For a whole class use groups and a caller who has the deck of cards to read. The cards are illustrated and in colour (see PREVIEW).
The cards are numbered in groups of six to correspond to the boards. Each group of six word cards will correspond to the six spaces on that board. If you have selected particular boards make sure you play with the corresponding numbered cards to match up. For example, if you are playing with Boards 1, 3 and 8, make sure you play with the eighteen cards that have these numbers in the top left hand corner.
This game suits a Literacy Centre as it can be played independently once players know the directions. Alternatively, you could start your intervention group with the illustrated cards. Once they know some of these, teach the game. As they become proficient, transfer the game to the Literacy Centre or Reading Group and let them teach others. This is ideal because your intervention group are exposed to the words more often and the repetition will help the words be retained in long term memory. You are being inclusive and developing confidence in those readers who need it most.
For students who need more time to consolidate the long vowel sounds and develop phonemic ability you may be interested in my MAGIC e SORT IT Bundle. It includes 63 word/picture cards and five games. Altogether, there is enough variety in this set to cater for a very diverse range of ability including extension as less familiar words are included.
