Your ELA Middle School students have probably studied the life of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. several times already, and will also have read "I Have a Dream." This MLK poster and accompanying questions will allow them to consider this inspirational leader and his views in a different way. The students study the poster (which can afterwards be displayed in your classroom year round) and focus on two of MLK's most powerful statements that are NOT drawn from "I Have a Dream." These statements were made in speeches, the first in 1957 (in Montgomery), the second in 1964. MLK echoed these words in his final sermon, 4 days before his assassination, saying So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do right.” After considering the poster and its quotes, the students then answer 7 questions on the 3 page handout. They have to analyze what the quotes mean, and give personal opinions backed up by examples. Only one of these seven questions refers at all to "I Have a Dream," asking students what their dream for the world would be about.
