In need of a great activity to leave for a substitute?
Students love puzzles, especially sudoku puzzles. This activity involves a “Pseudo-Ku.” Pseudo meaning “not genuine, a sham.” This doesn’t mean that there is anything false about this activity. It just doesn’t start with numbers, so it appears to be a Sudoku, hence a pseudosudoku (new term?).
Starting with a set of ten vocabulary words, the students must first complete the matching activity, matching terms to definitions.
Then, they use the number/letter pairs to substitute into the Pseudo-ku template. Lastly, they solve the puzzle using the basic rules of sudoku.
There are ten sets of 10 vocabulary terms in this resource. That means 100 math terms to engage your students!

There are many advantages to doing puzzles in math class, especially Sudoku, a game of logic, critical thinking and making decisions based upon available evidence.
Sudoku is a game that rewards students who have good attention to detail – who notice patterns, spot opportunities, and find the right moment to make a move. Promoting students’ attention to detail can help math students become orderly and methodical thinkers. They will be thinking strategically and solving creatively.
AND Pseudo-ku gives students a sense of accomplishment when they can solve a puzzle, especially one they find difficult.
