Many students feel frustrated or overwhelmed when asked to solve word problems in math.
CUBES was designed as a way for students to locate and pull the important information from a word problem. UPSET was designed to take this important information obtained from using CUBES, organize the information using a problem solving quadrant, and solve the problem.
CUBES and UPSET are easily remembered acronyms for organizing and solving math word problems in order to take away student frustration.
Use alone or together!
This structured approach to teaching to organize and solve word problems helps English Language Learners, students in Special Education and any struggling learner. It lets students organize the information within the word problem, pull out only the important information, and then solve the problem.
Used in conjunction, the strategies have shown proven success to the students that I have worked with each and every year.
