MCC4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Background

According to the breakdown of the standards, students aren’t actually expected to use the traditional algorithm for multiplication until 5th grade. In fact, some 5th grade teachers find that they are having to re-teach the traditional method, and go back and explain the distributive property. As fourth grade teachers, we can go ahead and back them up on this by preparing our kids with the understanding of the distributive property’s part in multiplication through place value.

In fact, if you look at the breakdown of the standard itself, NBT means Numbers and Operations in Base Ten! This means we should be using place value to help teach our kids how to multiply multi-digit numbers.
