This book can be used in a variety of different ways. There are two different versions of this book. The first book is intended for kindergarten students. The second book has more writing in it that can be geared towards higher level kindergarteners or first grade students. This book can be completed over a 1-2 week period.

Prior to reading Me on the Map discuss the following questions using a KWL Chart:

What do you know about maps?

What is a map?What are some reasons why people use maps?

Who can use a map?

Have you ever used a map? For what?

What kinds of maps have you seen or used before?

As a class, read aloud Me on the Map. Use real maps and/or Google Earth to show the places you are reading about in the book (street, neighborhood, city, state, world).

Students can partner read Me on the Map using the QR Code on the front cover of the book.

-Page 1 – Can be done in partners or as a whole class.

After doing Page 1, I usually break students up into groups of about 3-4 kids. Then I give each group a real map that I get from AAA. Students use a highlighter to find the parts of the map that we learned about on Page 1.

For the remainder of the pages, I use the Me on the Map book as a guide. Depending on your grade level and students you may want to complete the pages as a whole class, in partners, or in small groups.

-Page 2 – This is me.

-Page 3 – This is a map of my room.

-Page 4 – This is a map of my house.

-Page 5 – This is a map of my street.

-Page 6 – This is a map of my city.

I printed out small maps of my city from Google images.

-Page 7 – This is a map of my state.

I printed out maps of my state from http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/

-Page 8 – This is a map of my country.

Students scan the QR Codes to learn about various landforms. Then they use to the Key to identify and locate various landforms throughout the country.

-Page 9 – This is a map of my world.

Students can the QR Codes to learn about the continents. Students use the Key to color code the continents.
