This sub-element describes how a student becomes increasingly able to identify the attributes of shapes and objects and how they can be combined or transformed. Being able to use spatial reasoning and geometric properties to solve problems is important for a range of tasks. For example, dissection and rearrangement combined with basic geometric properties underpins surveying and building design, as well as interpreting plans.

Some students will communicate using augmentative and alternative communication strategies to demonstrate their numeracy skills. This may include digital technologies, sign language, braille, real objects, photographs and pictographs.

Successful teaching and learning to address student needs in relation to numeracy requires the teacher to have an understanding of where the student is now and where the student needs to go next in their numeracy development.

The National Numeracy Learning Progressions describe common pathways or developmental sequences for the acquisition of numeracy development. The progressions complement key learning outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework – particularly that children are confident and involved learners and effective communicators.

The progressions provide a tool to:

• locate the numeracy development of students and identify the numeracy development that should follow
• The progressions do not describe what to teach; they provide a detailed map of how students become increasingly adept in particular aspects of literacy and numeracy development.
