In this zip file are two resources:
MLA Citation Booklet: This booklet gives students an explanation for the necessity of citing sources, an explanation and image of a formatted Works Cited page, an explanation and example of parenthetical citations, and some common sources to cite, each with a template and an example. The 8th Edition of the MLA Handbook is much less rigid, so some basic guiding principals, including the idea of "containers" is included.
MLA Citation Handout: This 4 page worksheet lists information in a randomized order for 4 different types of sources. The worksheet is scaffolded so that exercises 1 & 2 have the information placed in the template and students just need to record it in order. Exercises 3 & 4 have screenshots from different sources where information needs to be first collected into the template and then organized into a citation.
NOTE: I've used this packet as a one class crash course on MLA citation. It is by no means a substitute for the MLA Handbook, but it is useful for introducing the idea of using citation in the English discipline.
Due to the nature of the updates in the 8th edition, there are no answer keys included. In case you are unfamiliar with the new guidelines, the order of information is standard but what information needs to be included is based on the needs of the research being done. (For example, if one is discussing the different direction in versions of Hamlet, you would include the directors' names; however, if you're talking about one of the plays in general, one would not need to mention the director. Likewise, information like city of publication is left out completely.) Because of this, some dialogue will be necessary between a given teacher and his/her classes to come to their own conclusion of what exactly makes up the best citation for the purpose. The practice exercises simply give some resources to sort and discuss.
