I wrote this brief quiz as a fun way for students to demonstrate their knowledge of MLA format. It could be adapted for APA style as well.
There are seven bogus citations using references to characters in "The Wizard of Oz." Students are asked to format the references for a Works Cited page in MLA style.
When I gave the quiz, I allowed the students to use their style guides and notes but gave them a 15-minute time limit. The quiz includes a bonus question for any students who finish early. The bonus question is flexible and could be made a required part of the quiz or removed.
The quiz could also be used as a homework assignment or in-class group review.
My blog has a variety of free teaching resources for upper level or college public speaking and includes a few writing assignments as well. See teachingpublicspeaking.wordpress.com
