Students will examine US geography through the lens of Major League Baseball. After labeling all 50 states on the attached map, students are tasked with locating the cities in which the 30 MLB franchises are based. Students will then color-code their maps to represent how the MLB has organized these 30 teams into two leagues and six divisions. A series of questions based upon MLB's organization follows, including an opportunity to improve upon the geographic proximity of teams by suggesting a new alignment.
The sports culture hook of this lesson provides a fun and engaging way for students to learn about US geography.
